Hiroshi Watanabe, President of the Institute for International Monetary Affairs

Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.

*Mr. Watanabe will join the event online.

Despite the devastating impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on the global economy there has (so far) been no financial system crisis accompanying these events. Equity markets have almost recovered pre-pandemic record highs while bond prices are high enough to push yields down to record lows.

The chief reason for this apparent financial system stability is the presence of trillions of dollars of official liquidly supplied by central banks through their monetary operations and by governments via fiscal stimulus.

Even in currency markets (where one day's turnover is equal to one tenth of global annual GDP) there has been no major disruption, although there have been signs of instability affecting everything from the dollar (the world's main reserve and transaction unit) to emerging market currencies.

Is there a storm yet to come as the full economic impact of the CORONAVIRUS crisis plays out?

Could the sheer volumes of money being created lead to an erosion of confidence in paper currencies or a surge in inflation, as the dramatic jump in the price of precious metals seems to be hinting?

Hiroshi Watanabe, a former vice finance minister for international affairs of Japan and former head of the Japan Bannk for International Cooperation (JBIC) will speak to the FCCJ in his current capacity as president of the Institute of International Monetary Affairs (IIMA) in Tokyo. Do not miss it!
