Join us on Saturday June 14 for the next in our popular series of Saturday lunch with Shakespeare, when the featured play is Love's Labour's Lost, a charming love story of four young couples in the ancient Kingdom of Navarre - close to the present day Basque region in Spain.
The play is rare in that it does not quite fit one of Shakespeare's typical genres. It's often categorized as comedy but, when the couples' happy courtships are abruptly interrupted, the mood changes to tragedy and may leave some audiences bemused. Nevertheless, it is a play for Shakespeare connoisseurs, filled with poetry and laughter.
Our guest speaker is Angela Davenport, Anglo-Japanese lecturer of Shakespeare, British Literature, Culture and Language at Tokyo Women's Christian University and the University of Tokyo.
Davenport has studied English Literature and Shakespeare both in Japan and England. Her D.Phil. thesis for Oxford University is on defamed women in Shakespeare. Her new projects are on digital humanities and the future of Renaissance studies.
Again, we are using the resources of the BBC TV Shakespeare series (1985). Directed by the renowned Elijah Moshinsky, this production includes Jonathan Kent as King of Navarre, Maureen Lipman as the Princess of France, Jenny Agutter
as Rosaline, Petra Markham as Katharine, David Warner as Don Armado and Frank Williams as Dull.
As is customary, our chef will prepare a delicious luncheon, inspired by the play.
Tickets, including lunch, are 2,000 yen per person and a cash bar is available. Cancellations after 6 p.m. Monday, June 9, will be charged in full. Doors open 11:45 and lunch will be served from 12:00. The play will start from 12:45 after Angela Davenport's introduction.
Please make reservations online or through the Front Desk (Tel. 03 3211 3161)
