Jazz Interpretations of Japanese Folk and Pop Melodies
In an unusual treat for FCCJ music fans, SNL presents Akira Tana and Otonowa straight from a tour supporting the Tohoku communities devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Akira is a Bay Area-based percussionist who together with other Japanese and Japanese-American musicians formed Otonowa (Sound Circle) to honor and support the victims of the 3/11 tragedy.
Otonowa’s performance for SNL will be their last stop on a tour that began in Tokyo and took them through Tohoku performing for the still rebuilding communities. Music clinics for youth groups were also part of the agenda.
For their music, Otonowa gives Japanese folk and pop melodies acoustically sound jazz interpretations. The members, all U.S. residents, include Art Hirahara on keyboards, Noriyuki Ken Okada on bass, Masaru Koga on saxophones, shakuhachi and percussion, and Akira Tana on drums. Saki Kono will present a few selections on vocals.
More info on the group can be found at www.otonowa-usa.com
As always, it's FREE. Never a cover, never a music charge. SNL is the best Saturday night out in Tokyo for those on a budget.
