The Taming of the Shrew

The “Shrew” is one of Shakespeare’s most famous, popular and controversial comedies,
constructed around the story of the strong-willed Katherine, notorious for her wit and
independence, and her suitor Petruchio, a young man in search of wealth who takes on
the challenge of marrying and ‘taming’ her. Set in Padua, it’s a fascinating romp around the themes of courtship, marriage, gender relationships, siblings, money, property, status, disguise, illusion, and public vs. private behaviour.

Produced and directed by Jonathan Miller, this BBC TV performance includes John Cleese (of Monty Python fame) as Petruchio and Sarah Badel as Katherine.

Our presenter is Stuart Varnam-Atkin. A long-term Japan resident, Stuart has carved a career in media-related activities, including writing, translation, narrating, acting and TV work.

Including a sumptuous Italian lunch, attendance is 2,000 yen per person. A cash bar is available. Please make reservations through the Front Desk (Phone 03-3211-3161) or online.

Doors open at 11:45 a.m. Lunch from 12:00 noon. The play, with a short intermission for dessert and coffee, will end at approximately 4.30 p.m.

Cancellations after 6 p.m. on February 9th will be charged in full.
