Tokyo gubernatorial candidate
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation
Toshio Tamogami is keen to get back into the spotlight. The former chief of staff of Japan's Air Self-Defense Force has declared that he will run in the Tokyo gubernatorial election - with the enthusiastic backing of Shintaro Ishihara, himself a former Tokyo governor and with similar conservative credentials.
Tamogami was removed as ASDF chief in 2008 by the then defense minister amid a furore caused by an essay in which he argued that Japan was not “the aggressor” in the wars it waged in the 1930s and 1940s. Rather, he claimed, Japan was drawn into a conflict with China by Chiang Kai-shek and into the Pacific War by communist agents who influenced U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt.
After his sacking, Tamogami became a political commentator and now heads the nationalist Gambare Nippon! Zenkoku Kodo Iinkai, a political action group based in Tokyo. He has also written a book on national defense which advocates, among other things, Japan acquiring nuclear weapons. He believes that Japan should restart its nuclear reactors.
In early polls, the independent Tamogami and the Communist-backed Kenji Utsunomiya are trailing the two leading candidates, Yoichi Masuzoe and Morihiro Hosokawa, but conservative web sites are calling Tamogami the "dark horse" candidate. Come and hear what he has in mind for the nation's capital.
