The struggles of Koreans in Japan are often invisible to the outside world. This is in part because Japanese society tends to ignore the issues, and the resident Koreans, who have their own internal divisions, seem to prefer a low profile.
The South Korean movie director Park Sayu, however, has found in the Korean community of Japan a rich vein of culture which she explores in much of her work. In her new film "One for All, All for One," Park follows the remarkable story of a Korean high school rugby team that defied all odds. It reached the semifinals of the Japanese high school national rugby championship as the Osaka Prefecture representative.
More than just another sports movie, Park's work examines the troubled territory of Korean-Japanese identity, the aspirations of youth, and the struggle of the human spirit against conditions of adversity.
The FCCJ is proud to be screening Park's new movie, and to be able to give our members a chance to meet the director and ask her questions about her important new work.
