Women of Fukushima Demand End to Nuclear Power
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation
When Environment Minister Nobuteru Ishihara recently stated that obtaining local approval in Fukushima to build interim storage facilities for radioactive soil would "in the end come down to money," he probably thought he was just explaining a political reality. He was quickly made to realize, however, that he had touched off an angry reaction from the people of Fukushima, who didn't care one bit for the implication that their concern over the lives of their families could be bought off with a few extra yen.
Underlining these deep concerns, a group of Fukushima women are coming to the FCCJ to share their difficult experiences. We've all heard wildly different estimations about whether or not the radiation which covered the lands and penetrated the waters of Fukushima pose a major health risk to the people who live there. Many analysts say that the risks of developing diseases like cancer may not be much higher than the general population. But would you be willing to risk your own child's life on that prediction? This is a real-life, agonizing issue for the women of Fukushima.
