Yoichi Masuzoe
Governor of Tokyo
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English

After his successful election campaign for Tokyo governor earlier this year, Yoichi Masuzoe has been keeping himself busy at home and abroad well ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

One of his first major tasks after becoming the leader of the Japanese capital was to visit China in April to help improve bilateral relations and learn from Beijing how the Chinese capital hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics without a major hitch. He also recently visited South Korea, where he met with President Park Geun Hye and delivered a message from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that he hopes to improve bilateral relations.

Masuzoe, 65, is working with the central government to conduct a review of the venue plans for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, while appointing a career diplomat to head the Tokyo metropolitan government’s foreign affairs activities.

He will spell out policies for his administration, including initiatives for the Tokyo Global Financial Center and energy policy, during his upcoming appearance before the club.

A native of Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Masuzoe graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1971 and later served as a research fellow at the University of Paris and the University of Geneva. He launched the Masuzoe Institute of Political Economy in 1989 and was first elected to the House of Councillors in 2001.

He served as health, labor and welfare minister under the governments of Shinzo Abe, Takeo Fukuda and Taro Aso from 2007 to 2009. He headed the New Renaissance Party between 2010 and 2013 before being elected Tokyo governor earlier this year.
