"Yoshimoto Kogyo & MCIP Holdings' Overseas Strategy"
Hiroshi Osaki
President & CEO of Yoshimoto Kogyo Co., Ltd.
Shizuko Yokote
President of MCIP Holdings Co., Ltd.
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation

If you've watched television in Japan, you've probably seen one of Yoshimoto Kogyo's comedians, emcees, musicians or TV programs. The Osaka-based entertainment powerhouse, which has been in business for over a century, is now trying to expand beyond its domestic foothold in Japan to markets overseas, especially in South East Asia, to tap growth as the Japanese market shrinks due to a declining and greying population. Now privately held after delisting, the company currently boasts some 20 million Twitter followers of its 6,000 entertainers and not only manages celebrities but also operates theaters across Japan and produces TV programs and digital content.

As part of its moves overseas, Yoshimoto has allied itself with Dentsu, Sony Music Entertainment (Japan), Aeon Mall, Dwango, Jikei Gakuen Group, the government-backed Cool Japan Fund and others, to set up MCIP Holdings to promote "Cool Japan" -- which Yoshimoto argues isn't just manga, anime and sushi. The new entity is looking to roll out its first projects in Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, including one show that would follow the trials and tribulations of Japanese celebrities sent to live long term in these countries and another that would search for the next Asian pop idol. It will distribute that content in the targeted markets through various platforms, including TV, multimedia, events and live performances.

Yoshimoto Kogyo President Hiroshi Osaki will provide an overview of his company's business, including its content production and push to expand globally, and discuss the Japanese entertainment industry. MCIP Holdings President Shizuko Yokote will outline the new overseas-focused joint venture.

Osaki joined Yoshimoto in 1978 after graduating from Kansai University and became chief executive in 2009. Yokote joined Yoshimoto in 2009 after a career in sports marketing, including for the FIFA 2002 World Cup in Japan, and became MCIP president in September.
