Asia Super Grid and Undersea Cable Project

Bo Normark, Senior Policy Advisor, Renewable Energy Institute

Ronnie Belmans, Executive Director, Global Smart Grid Federation

Hiroshi Takahashi, Professor, Tsuru University

Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English

The meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in the aftermath of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami rekindled interest in Japan in renewable energy. One of the many challenges facing renewables is how to provide continuous electrical service when the supply of electricity from solar and wind power can be intermittent. A part of the solution is to create regional grids, so power can be easily sent from where it's produced to where it's needed.

Japan's Renewable Energy Institute, founded by Masayoshi Son, arguably Japan's most visionary energy thinker, proposed the Asia Super Grid to knit together national electrical supply lines through undersea cable to ease and rationalize the distribution of renewable energy in this part of the world. On September 8, the institute is sponsoring an international workshop to review the status of the Asia Super Grid and exchange views on its realization. On September 6, three of the workshop's key speakers will brief the press on the status of the Asia Super Grid and describe some lessons Japan might learn from Northern Europe’s successful electricity market operations.

The three speakers are Bo Normark, Senior Policy Advisor, the Renewable Energy Institute and chair of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences' "Electricity Crossroads" project; Ronnie Belmans, Executive Director of the Global Smart Grid Federation; and Hiroshi Takahashi, a professor at Tsuru University who studies electricity system reform.

The workshop, titled "Global Energy Interconnections; Status and PerspectivesRealizing the Asia Super Grid," will be held on September 8 at Tokyo International Forum.

Please reserve in advance, 3211-3161 or on the website (still & TV cameras inclusive). Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation.
