Yasunori Kagoike, Moritomo Gakuen President
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.
The head operator of a school at the center of controversy over its purchase of state-owned land will state his case at the Club after dropping his application to open an elementary school on the site, amid questions in parliament and a media circus over the transaction widely described as a sweetheart deal.
Yasunori Kagoike told a news conference last Friday he had withdrawn the application and would quit as president of the Moritomo Gakuen institution, however, denying any wrongdoing and blaming the opposition parties and the media for making it difficult to complete the school project in the Osaka region. He also denied involvement of any politicians in the deal.
The institution has drawn nationwide attention after its kindergarten was found to have promoted old-style patriotism. It had advertised the projected elementary school by tentatively naming it after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The name was changed later. It enlisted the premier's wife, Akie, as its honorary principal before she gave up the position last month. The Abes have denied any part in the land deal.
