Language: The speech and Q&A will be in English.
It has been a year since several massive earthquakes struck Kumamoto Prefecture, killing about fifty people and destroying communities in areas such as Mashiki and Minami-Aso. Even central Kumamoto city had its services knocked out for days and the iconic Kumamoto Castle suffered considerable damage. It was one of the worst natural disasters to befall Japan since March 11, 2011.
This is thus a good opportunity to assess the full scope of the disaster, to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the emergency responses, and to learn how far the rebuilding process has progressed.
To lead us in our evaluation are two of the prefecture's most distinguished residents -- Kumamoto Governor Ikuo Kabashima and, making his return engagement to the Club, Sales Manager & Happiness Manager Kumamon.
Governor Kabashima is Harvard-educated and had a long career as an academic at Tsukuba University and the University of Tokyo before being first elected to his current position in 2008. His main academic publications focused on Japanese politics and public policies.
Kumamon hardly needs any introduction, as he is a national celebrity and assuredly one of the most successful yuru-kyara of them all.
Come to the FCCJ to hear what they have to say about the recovery of Kumamoto Prefecture.
