"Geo-Political and Military Operational Challenges facing Japan and its Allies"

Language: The Speech and Q&A will be in English

Japan's international defense trade show has attracted a lot of media attention over the past two years, following Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s decision to lift an export ban on military hardware. In its inaugural year in 2015, Maritime/Air Systems & Technologies – or MAST – attracted more than 100 media organizations.

This year's event, June 12-14, promises to be no different, with a large number of military-related officials expected to attend the event at Makuhari Messe (

Japan's Acquisition Technology and Logistics Agency will hold a JAPAN-ASEAN summit to coincide with MAST, and the Club is fortunate to have three officials to brief journalists about both events.

Professor Satoshi Morimoto is a former defense minister and, more recently, policy adviser to the current defense minister. Morimoto, chancellor of Takushoku University and chairman of MAST Asia, will outline current policy and the military and operational situation facing Japan and its allies. He will also talk about the event's significance at a time when Japan is openly marketing defense equipment.

Dr. Hideaki Watanabe, is a commissioner at the Acquisition Technology and Logistics Agency of Japan’s Ministry of Defense. He will discuss the evolution of Japanese defense equipment transfer policies, current international marketing activities, and the importance of MAST Asia.

Warren Edge, chief executive of MAST Communications-Japan Defense KK, will reveal the names of attendees at MAST Asia 2017, including Japanese and overseas naval officials, defense ministers and heads of equipment procurement. Edge will also explain the types of defense equipment being exhibited at the trade show.
