"The North Korea situation"

Language: The speech and Q & A will be Japanese with English interpretation

Many journalists based here also cover North Korea. At any time there is the possibility of an NHK alert telling us that a missile is flying over Japan and we have to jump into action.

The latest round of U.N. sanctions passed this week prompted an angry response from Pyongyang. Many people are saying that Kim Jong Un could launch an ICBM any day now, and movement is being seen at the isolated nation's nuclear test site.

So will Kim and Donald Trump continue to raise their fists and increase the already heightened tensions, or will they eventually find a path to dialogue? And how should Japan respond to the crisis? Should Tokyo acquire the capability to strike first at North Korean targets or even allow tactical nuclear weapons onto these shores?

Here to discuss the situation is Kang Sang-jung, a specialist in political science and regular commentator on TV and in newspapers and magazines. Kang has served at International Christian University, Tokyo University and Seigakuin University.
