"The impact of Whaling, Coal and Climate Change on Our Oceans & the Great Barrier Reef"

Language: The Speech and Q&A will be in English.

With its vast lands and oceans, and the Great Barrier Reef, Australia is known for its nature, but attacks from both natural and human sources make survival of its natural resources a key issue in Australian politics.

As a lifelong passionate surfer and diver, Tasmania Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, representing the Greens, is at the forefront of conservation and environmental protection initiatives and has called for action on climate change, whaling, illegal fishing and lethal shark mitigation. He has highlighted the environmental damage from industrial fishing and aquaculture, and the pervasive global impact of plastics and micro-plastic pollution on marine life.

He is currently chairing the Australian Senate Inquiry into the Current and Future Impacts of Climate Change on Marine Fisheries and Biodiversity which has largely focused on recent damage done to the Great Barrier Reef from climate change and warming oceans. Recent coral bleaching events have killed nearly half the corals on the Great Barrier Reef and the giant kelp forests of Tasmania. This presents many challenges, not just to the environment, but to the tourism industry, the fisheries industry, government decision makers and scientists.

Whish-Wilson is an economist by training, and created and taught one of Australia’s first ever Environmental Finance courses at the University of Tasmania. He has worked on Wall Street in the financial services sector and run small businesses. He uses this knowledge and experience to lead the fight in the Senate against inequality, pollution, excessive corporate power, tax avoidance and white-collar crime.

Peter Whish-Wilson will come to the Club to talk about whaling, climate change and the Great Barrier Reef, and what is and what isn't being done to protect the environment.

Please reserve in advance, 3211-3161 or on the website (still & TV cameras inclusive). Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation.
