"Shosha Business and Outlook for Japan's Trade:
Trade Wars – Lesson From the Past"

Trade is the foundation of economic activity, one that builds prosperity and peace. Yet the term "trade war" is increasingly heard nowadays, damaging confidence among businessmen and investors and rising the specter of unemployment and economic recession. Trade wars have even triggered "real" wars in the past.

Japan's Sogo Shosha or general trading companies have been pillars of global trade for decades - centuries in some cases – and for an analysis of what is happening now in the world trade few are better qualified than a key executive of one of Japan's leading trading giants.

Kiyoshi Sunobe, President & CEO of Sumitomo Corporation Global Research Company will discuss the outlook for trade between Japan and other nations, and the importance of trade for Japan. He will also discuss the history of the Sogo Shosha, and how they have transformed their unique business model when facing drastic change in the business environment such as "trade wars" in the past.

Sunobe was appointed as the CEO of Sumitomo Corporation Europe in 2013, and was based in London. Then from April 2015, he also took on the role as General Manager for the EMEA-CIS region, which includes 47 offices and a wide-range of industries. From April 2018, he commenced his current position, President and CEO of Sumitomo Corporation Global Research, an in-house think tank of Sumitomo Corporation Group.
