The speech and Q&A will be in English

"Recent Developments in Yemen (Port City of Al Hodeida) and the Gulf Energy Supplies to Japan and East Asia"

The war in Yemen, including recent developments in the port city of Hodeida, has been a topic of attention for the international media. The Saudi-led Arab Coalition "to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen," with the active participation of the UAE, has seen developments recently that gave some hope the war may end.

Yemen's neighboring countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have been a very important source of oil and gas to Japan. Arab oil provided 82% of Japan petroleum needs in May 2018 (the UAE share was 20%) and the whole Middle East provided nearly 90%-making the region a vital source for Japan's energy security.

United Arab Emirates Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Japan, Mr. Khaled Omran Alameri, will speak to the Club on July 13, giving a first-hand account of the developments in the region and the impact on Japan and East Asia in terms of energy economy and other aspects. The speech will also include how the Emirati cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai are at the center of world class projects.

Ambassador Alameri has deep ties to Japan, dating to the years prior to his diplomatic assignment. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Tokai University in 2002, after which he obtained a Masters of Science in Engineering from Shonan Institute of Technology in Fujisawa.

Following the completion of a year of service with the UAE Navy in 2005, Ambassador Alameri worked as the Programs Manager of the private investment corporation Emirates Advanced Investments (EAI). Later on, Ambassador Alameri returned to the national forces as the Head of Research and Development at the Capability Development department of the UAE Land Forces. He was appointed as the Minister Plenipotentiary at the UAE Embassy in Tokyo in March 2016.
