"Korean Labourers Vs Nippon Steel:
Lawyers seek compensation for South Koreans Forced to Work for Japanese firms"

A series of rulings by South Korea's Supreme Court has rubbed salt on already raw diplomatic wounds with Japan. In several cases, the court has said that Japanese companies must pay compensation to Koreans forced to work during the Second World War. Japan has long insisted that all compensation claims were settled in the 1965 treaty that established diplomatic ties between the two nations.

In October, the Supreme Court ordered Nippon Steel to pay four Koreans compensation for their forced labor. However when their lawyers turned up at the offices of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp. in Tokyo last month to discuss the ruling they were turned away at the door by security guards.

Positions seem to be hardening on both sides. Several other judgments are in the pipeline, while Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has threatened to take the issue to the International Court of Justice. The two lawyers today will discuss this background as well as their specific case.

Kim Se Eun and Lim Jae-sung are lawyers for the plaintiffs in several cases, including the suit against Nippon Steel and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. Lim has a Ph.D. in Sociology from Seoul National University and was also a visiting Scholar at Kyoto University. Come along and hear what they have to say about an issue that continues to haunt ties between the two Asian countries.
