Hitoshi Kuninaka,
Vice President, JAXA and Director General, JAXA ISAS

Yuichi Tsuda,
Associate Professor, JAXA ISAS and Project Manager of Hayabusa2 Project Team

"Update on Hayabusa2's Pioneering Space Mission"

The speech and Q & A will be in English

When our speakers from JAXA visited the FCCJ the first time this summer, the Japanese space probe Hayabusa2 had just rendezvoused with the asteroid Ryugu.

Since then, the probe has been investigating the tiny diamond-shape rock orbiting the sun in an ambitious project scheduled to last 18 months.

Hayabusa2 has already deployed two small bouncing robot rovers and a mobile lander on the surface of the asteroid. JAXA is also rehearsing the probe for three possible touchdowns on separate areas of the asteroid to scoop up and bring back a variety of soil samples before making the 5 billion km journey back to Earth.

Our speakers will reveal what they have discovered about Ryugu so far and will update us on what they expect to learn in the coming weeks and months. Join us, then, to hear how Japan is building on the success of the first space probe Hayabusa and is making space history.

Dr. Kuninaka completed a Ph.D. program in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, The University of Tokyo in 1988. In 2011 he served as Lunar and Planetary Exploration Program Group Director at JAXA, then assumed a project manager of Hayabusa2 in 2012. Kuninaka became Director General of Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), JAXA on April 1, 2018. In this role he also serves as a vice president of JAXA.
