Masatsugu Asakawa, Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs, Ministry of Finance

(The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation)

"The Global Economy and the G20"

The global economy is in peril as world leaders prepare for this month's G20 meeting in Osaka.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who will chair the conference, is expected to have his hands full as he attempts to defuse a multi-front trade war involving the U.S. and China, the U.S. and Europe, the U.S. and Japan. Growth has slowed. For Japan, the threat of US tariffs on its auto exports still looms large.

If nothing else, the Trump administration has shaken up how business is conducted between the world's leading economies which will be tasked - 19 of them plus the European Union - with steering a course for stable economic growth in unstable times.

Other issues on summit's agenda include the future of the World Trade Organization and rules for digital trade.

Hear first-hand what the Japanese finance ministry hopes to achieve from Masatsugu Asakawa, the ministry's point man on international affairs, who is responsible for G20/International Monetary Fund issues, exchange rate policy and development assistance.

During nearly four decades at the ministry, Asakawa has served in numerous international roles, including stints at the IMF and the Asian Development Bank.

Fresh from the G20 finance ministers meeting in Fukuoka, Asakawa's views about a range of issues are sure to be of interest to any correspondent covering the G20 or Japan's economy more generally.
