Glen Wood, Former Head of Global Sales at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities Co., Ltd.

(The speech and Q & A will be in English)

"Paternity Harassment: Glen Wood vs. Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley"

As a businessman, Glen Wood ticked all the boxes: MBA in Finance from The Wharton School and work with Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley and government think tanks. As a parent, he went down the road less traveled. His partner gave premature birth to their son in Nepal. With his child's life in danger, Wood claimed the paternity leave he was entitled to under Japanese law.

But his employer – Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley – insisted that Wood took unpaid leave. When he returned, Wood says the company harassed him mercilessly, cut his salary and eventually fired him without severance.

All this seems at odds with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's call for more men to be involved in childcare, and with Japan's legal workplace protections during maternity and paternity leave.

Cue lawsuit. Wood has spent two years fighting the corporate might of his former employer to try and claim his rights as a father. The court case was due to climax on July 5 at the Tokyo District Court but it was abruptly cancelled on July 1st. Wood will come to the FCCJ to explain why along with the latest developments in this landmark case, which could have wide implications for other parents and court cases in Japan.
