Philippe Riès, Former AFP Bureau Chief

(The speech and Q & A will be in English)

"Behind the Carlos Ghosn Saga"

Nine months since his shock arrest by Tokyo prosecutors, the fate of Carlos Ghosn hangs in the balance. The former head of Nissan Motors says he is innocent and has assembled a crack legal team to fight charges of financial misconduct. Prosecutors have accused him of enriching himself at Nissan's expense, and have apparently piled up evidence that could put him behind bars for years. Ghosn himself has kept a relatively low profile since his release on bail in April but that is likely the quiet before the storm.

Is Ghosn, as he insists, the victim of a conspiracy by Nissan executives who were trying to block a merger with Nissan's French partner Renault? What is the role of the Japanese and French governments in Japan's biggest business scandal? Our speaker today will attempt to answer these questions and lay out the background to Ghosn's arrest. Philippe Riès is a 45-year veteran of journalism, including 27 years with AFP. He was Tokyo bureau chief from 1998-2003, when Ghosn was first dispatched to Japan to help rescue Nissan. He is the author of four books, including "The Asia Storm" (1998) and "Citoyen du Monde", with Ghosn (2003).
