Mario Garrett, Professor of Gerontology, San Diego State University

(The speech and Q & A will be in English)

"The Politics of Alzheimer's Disease and the Impact on Japan"

Japan isn't getting any younger -- and neither is the world. Aging was one of the topics that Japan homed in on during its G20 presidency this year, leading discussions on the policy responses that may be needed for aging societies across the globe.

The politics of Alzheimer's disease may be part of that broader debate, with confusion over how research is conducted potentially delaying the path toward either a cure or adequate care.

Professor Mario Garrett is a specialist in gerontology, San Diego State University, and has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles on minority aging and theoretical articles on Alzheimer's Disease. One of his recent books include Politics of Anguish: How Alzheimer's disease became the malady of the 21st century. He'll be discussing how the world's third most funded disease (after cancer and HIV) has been given the wrong approach, and be giving policy recommendations on how care can be improved.
