Christian Whiton, Senior Fellow, Center for the National Interest

(The speech and Q & A will be in English)

"Trade Talks and U.S. Actions"

Amid nearly unprecedented political turmoil in Washington, the U.S. is fighting a trade war against China, engaging in lower-profile trade talks with Japan, and seeking drastic modifications to its economic, political, and military relationships with Europe. Washington is also in the process of a fundamental redirection of its overall policy toward China. While President Trump and Chinese president Xi Jinping decided to resume trade talks at the G20, much remains unsettled, including the treatment of major Chinese technology companies like Huawei. Meanwhile, the U.S. presidential campaign is heating up with Trump's opponents offering voters a starkly different approach to governance and foreign affairs. Christian Whiton, who served in Trump's administration and his presidential transition, as well as several other presidential campaigns, offers his assessment of the U.S. political situation and factors in Washington that affect trade talks and other U.S. actions.

In the Trump administration, Whiton was a senior advisor for strategic communications at the State Department. He advised the new administration on public diplomacy, media, and East Asia issues. On the presidential transition, he served as an advisor to the Secretary of State, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and ambassadors to Israel and Japan for their Senate confirmations.
