Keun Ie Yuh, President of the Central Headquarters, The Korean Residents Union in Japan (Mindan)

(The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation)

"How Diplomatic Tensions are Affecting Korean Residents"

Relations between Japan and South Korea have deteriorated dramatically in recent weeks, raising fears about trade and their ability to cooperate on North Korea's nuclear weapons programme.

Already shaky ties began to cool when Tokyo placed restrictions on exports of semiconductor materials that are considered vital to South Korea's tech industry. Japan then ended South Korea's fast-track export status.

The moves were seen by some as retaliation for South Korean court rulings last year ordering Japanese companies to compensate Koreans who were forced to work in Japan before and during World War II. The dispute has affected trade, cultural exchanges and tourism. Late last month, South Korea said it would scrap an intelligence-sharing pact with Japan, drawing a swift protest from Tokyo.

How has the deterioration in Tokyo-Seoul ties affected Koreans living in Japan? Keun Ie Yuh, president of the central headquarters of The Korean Residents Union in Japan (Mindan), will come to the club to discuss the current situation and how it has impacted the Korean community here.

Before he became Mindan president in 2018, he served as vice-president and chairman of the organisation. His involvement in the Korean community began in 1972, when he helped establish the Korean Youth Association in Japan.
