"Overview of Asian Development"

Takehiko Nakao, President, Asian Development Bank

*Please note that Mr. Nakao will be retiring as president of The Asian Development Bank before the event.

Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.

What is the real secret of East Asia's Japan-led postwar economic success? Was it really a "miracle" (as suggested by the World Bank in 1993) or were there more mundane - if equally impressive - factors at work? Critically, can that success to maintained in a geo-economic environment that is changing rapidly and fundamentally?

Few people are in a better position to answer these key questions than Takehiko Nakao, who last month stepped down after seven years as head of the Asian Development Bank and who is lead author of a book - "Asia's Journey to Prosperity" - that promises to become the definitive account of what really lies behind Asia's seemingly miraculous transformation from poverty to relative prosperity. In presenting his "Overview of Asian development" at the Club, the former ADB president will reflect on his seven years as head of the institution from 2013 to 2020 and focus especially on current conditions affecting China, ASEAN, India and others - all of which now face a possibly less open global environment than that which has nurtured Asia's remarkable economic success.

Before joining the ADB, Nakao was the Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs at the Ministry of Finance of Japan, which he joined in 1978. He was assigned as Minister at the Embassy of Japan in Washington D.C., between 2005 and 2007, and from 1994 to 1997 served as an economist and adviser at the International Monetary Fund.

He has published books and numerous papers on financial and economic issues, and in 2010 and 2011 was a Visiting Professor at the University of Tokyo. Born in 1956, Nakao holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Tokyo and a Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley.
