"Japan's New Opposition Force in the Post-Abe Era"

Yukio Edano, Leader of the Constitutional Democratic Party

Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.

Yukio Edano returns to the FCCJ amidst significant upheaval in the Japanese political landscape. With the recent exit of Shinzo Abe as the nation's longest serving prime minister in favor of his chosen successor Yoshihide Suga, Edano was selected to head the newly formed Constitutional Democratic Party upon the merger of two opposition groups.

A native of Tochigi Prefecture and representing Saitama, Edano has held a variety of senior leadership positions in government but is perhaps best known for his term as the top government spokesman during the Fukushima disaster in 2011. Can he and the new opposition force score points against Suga? Come along and hear what he has to say.
