Kelsang Gyaltsen, Envoy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Time: 2009 May 20 15:00 - 16:00
Summary:

Press Conference,
Kelsang Gyaltsen,
Envoy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Language:

The speech and Q & A will be in English.

Description:

The 50th anniversary of uprising that forced The Dalai Lama, Tibet's spiritual leader, into exile in India produced little coverage, except for the news that a China-based cyber spy network had hacked into government and private computer systems in 103 countries, including that of the exiled Tibetan government.

The Dalai Lama says he has pursued a "Middle Way Approach" with the Chinese government aimed at obtaining, not independence, but a high level of autonomy for Tibet within China, in order to preserve Tibetan religion and cultural heritage.

However, Beijing still continues to label him as a separatist, and has been sharply critical whenever world leaders agree to meet him. In the latest incident, China early this month warned France not to grant The Dalai Lama honorary citizenship of Paris when he visits next month, saying it would only anger the Chinese people.

Kelsang Gyaltsen, Envoy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, will come to the Club to talk about the current situation after the breakdown of negotiations with China last year.
