While observing a Nazi war-crime trial, law student Michael is shocked to see among the defendants Hanna (Winslet), the older woman with whom he had had a passionate affair when he was 15. Hanna loved it when Michael read to her, and he had never recovered from her sudden disappearance. During her testimony, Michael realizes that he has important information that could save Hanna from life imprisonment. But he is torn about disclosing her secret. Winslet won an Oscar for this role.
