Description:
Roy Garner 1950-2009

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of yet another long-time member of the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan.

Roy Garner died Wednesday, Oct. 14, at home in Britain.

His younger brother Alan said he was surrounded by his family and loved ones as the three short weeks he was able to spend at home came to an end.

A private man, Roy made no mention of his illness, preferring instead to have us remember him in health and joy than in the inevitable sadness that accompanies failing health.

Roy, a long-time Club member, was filing pictures to Rex Features almost to the end, was the welcome "voice-behind-the news" on NHK and other stations for years, a radio correspondent, newspaper correspondent for most of Fleet Street over the years and an accomplished writer of both fiction and non-fiction books, many of which also featured his photographs from around the world, and most notably, from East Asia.

For me, he was a wonderful friend, colleague and competitor in the old Fleet Street times and for years the perfect indefatigable squash partner. After thousands of games until the Isetan Sports Club in Todoroki closed, we were likely less than a dozen games apart in the numbers won and lost.

At the FCCJ, he was a stalwart member of the Movie Committee for so many years no one can really remember when it all began.

He will be sadly, sadly missed by all of us.

A memorial service in Britain is planned for Monday, Oct. 26 at 13:15 hours.

Messages can be sent to Alan at garner.price@tiscali.co.uk
