Description:

Jake Adelstein's journey through the world of reporting in Japan was not the one we all know. Entering the business working for the Yomiuri Shimbun, he followed the path of all young reporters through regional offices -- in his case Saitama -- and ended up in the newspaper's Shakaibu. There he landed a stress-filled job covering organized crime and became the only American to gain admittance to the Metropolitan Police Department's press club.

Adelstein's fascinating story is told out in a new book, "Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter On the Police Beat in Japan," that reveals as much about organized crime in Japan as it does the inner-workings of the Japanese newspaper industry and the insular press club system. It also charts his relationship with the Yakuza -- a relationship that would end with him leaving the Yomiuri with an unpublished major scoop on a Yakuza boss.

At the FCCJ on Wednesday Adelstein will talk about the book, his experiences and take your questions. Join us for what is likely to be a highly interesting and revealing event for all journalists.
