The speech and Q & A will be in Englsih and Japanese with simultaneous interpretation.

Description:

Public prosecutors, who may be directed by motives they themselves can only see as entirely serious, and as serving the nation, can sometimes be a threat to Japanese democracy. With significant discretionary powers they have the ability to end or curtail the careers of anyone who appears to upset the balance inside Japan's informal political system.

The campaign against Ichiro Ozawa was a perfect and predictable example of this. More cases are bound to follow as the "Minshuto" threatens the status quo of Japanese politics in the biggest way for decades.

To discuss the power held by Japanese prosecutors, and the role played by the media in their campaigns, the Club has invited: Nobuo Gohara, director of the Compliance Research Center of Meijo University; Takafumi Horie, former Livedoor CEO and victim of what he terms a "state sponsored investigation"; and Karel van Wolferen, journalist and author of "The Enigma of Japanese Power."

Don't miss what is sure to be an event opening up an important new and timely discussion.
