Kotaro Tamura,
Member of the House of Councilors, DPJ
The speech and Q & A will be in English.
Description:House of Councilors member Kotaro Tamura was the first national lawmaker of the long-dominant Liberal Democratic Party to quit the party to join the ruling Democratic Party of Japan following the general election last summer.
Tamura said in quitting the LDP last December that the party is not capable of rescuing the Japanese economy. Tamura subsequently joined the DPJ in February, enabling the DPJ to keep the DPJ-led intra-parliamentary faction and obtain a crucial majority in the upper house.
DPJ Secretary General Ichiro Ozawa called on the two-term upper house member, who served as parliamentary secretary of the Cabinet Office for Economic and Fiscal Policy for Financial Services, to work hard to help the DPJ to strengthen its growth and economic/fiscal strategies.
Tamura earned an MBA from Keio University Graduate School of Business and also studied at Duke Law School, Yale University Graduate School and Oxford University. He was an M&A dealmaker at Yamaichi Securities and newspaper executive before switching to politics. He will come to the club to explain his switch of parties and he will offer recipes to revitalize the Japanese economy.
