Description:

While Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama is struggling to improve Japan-U.S. relations, Japanese Communist Party (JCP) Chairperson Kazuo Shii is drawing the national spotlight thanks to his historic trip to the United States from April 30 through May 8.

The first leader of the party that is traditionally critical of Washington to visit the United States, Shii will attend a conference to review the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in New York and later may meet with U.S. government officials.

Shii met with U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos on April 21, shortly before his visit to the United States. A year ago, he sent a letter to express his support for U.S. President Barack Obama's speech on a nuclear-free world in Prague and received an official response from Washington.

He will come to the club to talk about the outcome of his trip to the United States, the ongoing political realignment in Japan and the JCP's vision for economic growth in Japan.
