Description:

The Dalai Lamas of Tibet have carried a position of political leadership in their community stretching back to the 17th century. At times they have served as the Tibetan government itself. All the more path-breaking, therefore, were the announcements last year that the current 14th Dalai Lama wants to give up his political office and introduce a new system by which Tibet political leaders are directly elected by the people.

The top position of this new democratic system is the office of Kalon Tripa (effectively prime minister) and in August 11 our guest to the FCCJ, Dr. Lobsang Sangay, was elected by the Tibetan diaspora community to assume this responsible position.

Dr. Lobsang Sangay will come to our club to discuss the devolution of power by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and also to speak of the Tibetan situation more broadly.

Dr. Lobsang Sangay was born and grew up in a Tibetan settlement near Darjeeling, where he attended the Central School for Tibetans. He completed his B.A. and LLB degrees from Delhi University, and in 1992 was elected as the youngest executive member of the Tibetan Youth Congress (CENTREX). He is an expert on International Human Rights Law, Democratic Constitutionalism, and Conflict Resolution.

Please come and join us for what promises to be a stimulating discussion with a top Tibetan leader as he and his colleagues map out a future for their people.
