FCCJ 66th Anniversary with Scholarship Party

Time: 2011 Dec 01 18:30 - 21:00
Summary:

Thursday, December l, 2011
Door open: 6:30 p.m.

Description:

Once again the FCCJ will be alive with good music and camaraderie when the Entertainment and Scholarship Committees get together to celebrate our founding. Since both our anniversary and the fund raising are so important to our Club and its members we decided to have a big bash for our 66th birthday party.

The Scholarship Committee is also sponsoring a Raffle and Silent Auction providing a chance for members and guests to obtain or win diamond jewelry, golf equipment, travel deals, sumptuous dinners at famed hotels, semi-precious jewelry and more. Proceeds from the Raffle and Silent Auction will benefit the FCCJ Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship Fund that provides monetary assistance for young journalists.

There will also be gifts for longtime members and those who have contributed so much for our Club over the years.

The very popular group Moonshots will be with us again to top off our fun evening with their eclectic music for listening and dancing pleasure. Our super chefs Kashima-san and Saito-san are whipping up a banquet to tantalize our taste buds.

Tickets are Y4,500 and include one raffle ticket. More raffle tickets can be purchased for Y500 each or five for Y2,000 for a greater chance at winning the wonderful prizes donated by the International and local business communities and members.

See you in the Pen and Quill for a fun-filled evening with fellow members and guests.

Please make your reservations at the Reception Desk (3211-3161) or online. Reservations not cancelled 24 hours in advance will be charged in full.

Summary:

Martyn Williams
Exploring Video

18:30-20:30 February 9, 2010
(The speech and Q & A will be in English)

Description:

For most correspondents the arrival of the Internet has meant an increasing demand for multimedia of all kinds -- images, slideshows, podcasts and video.

In the summer of 2006 Martyn Williams, Tokyo correspondent for IDG News Service, answered a call from his company to experiment with video. Days later he received a camera but little else. So began a crash course in Web video production during which he researched both the technical and creative sides of the medium.

On Feb. 9 he'll be sharing his experiences about what worked, what didn't, and answering questions as part of the FCCJ's series of events for journalists. If you're interested in exploring video and don't know where to start this is an excellent opportunity to get your feet wet.

Former FCCJ President Martyn Williams is Tokyo Bureau Chief for IDG News Service and covers the vibrant IT and consumer electronics industry in Japan and South Korea in text and video.

He came to Japan in 1995 from his native U.K. and has covered the nation's information technology industry for the duration of his stay. Since the late 1990s he has also covered the industry in neighboring South Korea. He joined the News Service in 1999. Prior to his stay in Japan he covered computing, the nascent Internet of the time and satellite television and communications for several media outlets in Europe.

At present he is following the restructuring of Sony, the gaming console market, environmental issues in the electronics sector and 3D television.

Don't miss this opportunity to find out about video from a seasoned reporter.

Please reserve in advance (3211-3161 or http://www.fccj.or.jp). The charge for members/guests is 1,850 yen and 1,200 yen for students, and includes a buffet dinner. Reservations canceled less than 24 hours in advance will be charged in full. Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation.

Are you a university student in Japan who is interested in becoming a journalist but doesn’t know exactly what they do? Are you looking for journalism internships, but discouraged by the lack of opportunities? If so, please join us for the Autumn 2009 Journalism Training Workshop at FCCJ on November 21st.

Since its inception, nearly 200 students in Tokyo and Osaka have participated in what students and their professors have said is the only ``hands-on’’ workshop of its kind in Japan. The workshop is given by a team of experienced foreign correspondents and provides students with a taste of what daily reporting is all about through an exercise that includes asking questions, attending a mock news event, and putting together a story on deadline The exercise, adapted from an actual disaster training program used by Reuters news service, provides an excellent introduction to the basics of interviewing, fact-gathering and writing techniques.

Students who complete the workshop are also entitled to enter their names on a Part-Time Student Assistant List that is made available to FCCJ journalists interested in hiring a part-time assistant for a short-term project or for longer periods of time. The FCCJ sets a minimum rate of 1,000 yen per hour on potential employers for students on the list. Interviewing and negotiations for the positions are the responsibility of the individuals themselves.
