Japan, 1975 35 minutes (English voiceover)
Produced by Haruko Watanabe, President of HKW

Language:

Discussion and Q&A will be in English and Japanese

Description:

Nadeshiko Japan became a household name - and a beacon of hope - in 2011. Following the soccer team's historic World Cup win, its captain, Homare Sawa, was named FIFA's top female player in the world, and "Nadeshiko Japan" was declared the official media buzzword of the year. Against the backdrop of the March 11 tragedies, the nation celebrated Nadeshiko's triumphs as one. But will this inspire Japanese women to expect more? How far have Japanese women really come since the First World Conference on Women in 1975 and the United Nations Decade of Women (1976-1985)? How have global media helped (or hurt) the image of women as they struggled to advance their goals? How do we ensure that women continue to work with and through the media to achieve further progress?

In conjunction with the long-anticipated DVD release of the groundbreaking Japanese series "Women Pioneers," the Foreign Correspondents' Club is presenting a short screening and moderated discussion with a panel of media experts who resoundingly believe that the future belongs to the women in Japan. We will screen a short DVD featuring Fusae Ichikawa, leader of women’s suffrage (and former Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s mentor), before convening our panel, comprised of veteran journalists Haruko Watanabe, President of HKW; Yoshio Murakami, Special Advisor for the International Herald Tribune; Suvendrini Kakuchi, Tokyo correspondent for Inter Press Service; and Lucy Birmingham, Tokyo reporter for TIME.

This special bilingual event is open to the public, with students especially encouraged to attend.

Light refreshments will be served during the evening, at a cost of ¥1,050 (incl. tax) for FCCJ members, their guests and general audiences, and ¥525 (incl. tax) for students. There will also be a cash bar. Please sign up at the FCCJ Reception Desk (3211-3161) or online at http://www.fccj.or.jp/node/7214 . On March 2, please pick up your ticket at the front desk from 5:30 pm, when doors open. Cancellations received after noon that day will be charged in full.

A joint presentation of the Special Projects, Library and Movie Committees.

IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE!!

Time: 2012 Feb 11 18:30 - 21:00
Summary:

The Urban Achievers
Country, Hillbilly Boogie and Blues

Description:

The Urban Achievers are an acoustic trio featuring guitarist/vocalist J.J. Vicars with Hugh Ashton on Dobro and Hisa Nakase on bass. Together they perform an eclectic mix of Country, Western Swing, Blues and Americana.

Following the March 11th earthquake and tsunami, J.J. wrote a surf style instrumental called "MELTDOWN." Hugh was one of the first musicians to contribute a track playing the lap steel guitar. ("MELTDOWN," released under the band name Premature Evacuation, is available for download at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/prematureevacuatio. All proceeds go to the disaster relief effort.) Meanwhile, J.J. and Hugh started getting together for gigs as The Urban Achievers.

A press club favorite from way back, J.J. has played in a variety of groups both here in Japan and back in the States. During his ongoing residence in Tokyo he has released four solo albums, all available at http://www.cdbaby.com/all/jjvicars.) He has four more albums on the way.

Hugh Ashton, despite being British, plays the resonator guitar (Dobro®) in a self-taught, vaguely country style. While still in the UK, he played bass and keyboards in a number of New Wave bands. Since coming to Japan, he has taken up pickin' and slidin' and grinnin'. He also writes novels, with two published and another on the way.
And this time, on bass, is Hisa Nakase, whom many SNL regulars will remember regularly backs up Steve Gardner. The Urban Achievers are just the thing for warmin' up a chilly Frebruary evening in the Tokyo urbanopolis.
