PRESS CONFERENCE

Georgia looks to a future beyond the war in Ukraine
Teimuraz Lezhava, Ambassador of Georgia

14:00-15:00 Monday, May 23, 2022
(The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation)
The impact of the war raging in Ukraine has reached Georgia's separatist region of South Ossetia, which  announced that on July 17 it will vote on whether or not to join Russia. The breakaway republic was at the center of Moscow's military intervention in Georgia in 2008.

To shed light on current developments and the future of Georgia, the FCCJ has invited Teimuraz Lezhava, ambassador of Georgia to Japan. He will explain his country's geopolitical position, how Georgia views the course of the war between Ukraine and Russia, and how regional events may play out.

Aside from the war, Ambassador Lezhava will discuss other aspects of life in his home country, covering its culture and cuisine. He notes Shkmeruli, chicken braised in a garlic milk sauce, has become very popular in Japan.

Ambassador Lezhava graduated from the Waseda University School of International Liberal Arts in September 2011 and is fluent in Japanese. He worked with the Kikkoman Corporation before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, later being appointed counselor at the embassy in Tokyo. He became the ambassador to Japan on November 15, 2021.
