PRESS CONFERENCE

“The Kishida Administration's Foreign Policy Faces Rising Global Tensions”

Shikata Noriyuki, Cabinet Secretary for Public Affairs

11:00-12:00 Friday, August 19, 2022
(The speech will be in English)

Chinese ballistic missiles thought to have splashed down in what Japan sees as its exclusive economic zone earlier this month are just the latest in a series of major foreign policy challenges that have confronted Fumio Kishida's administration in the 10 months since he became prime minister. As many warn of the increasing rise of autocracy around the globe, Kishida has thrown in Japan's lot with Western democracies, building on its alliance with the US to strengthen ties with NATO, and supporting Ukraine in its efforts to fend off Russian invasion. As global divisions deepen, the ever-more apparent need for cooperation on climate change risks being shifted to the backburner. Join veteran diplomat Shikata Noriyuki, who has a wealth of experience at his country's missions in the U.S. and China, to hear how Japan plans to pick its way through the minefield of 2020s geopolitics.
