Description:"Human Rights Watch: Recommendations On Burma To The Next Japanese Administration"
As the largest OECD donor to the Burmese government, Japan has an unusually strong degree of influence in a country where the ruling junta systematically denies citizens basic freedoms, including freedom of expression, association and assembly. The number of political prisoners rose from 1,100 in mid-2007 to more than 2,100 in early 2009.
On April 9th, Human Rights Watch will open a Tokyo office, and at the FCCJ, Kenneth Roth, the organization's executive director, and Kanae Doi, director of the new Tokyo office, will offer advice on what the next Japanese administration should do to improve Burma's rights record.
Bo Kyi, a 2008 Human Rights Watch Award winner, will speak on political repression in Burma, the situation of current political prisoners and offer his views on the 2010 election.
Please join us for this extremely important and timely perspective on Burma, and on Japan-Burma relations.
Bo Kyi, Kenneth Roth & Kanae Doi
