Upon turning 40 and emerging from the closet in 1972, Harvey Milk (Penn, in an extraordinary Oscar-winning performance) settles in San Francisco and becomes deeply involved in the burgeoning gay rights movement. Five years later, he becomes the first openly gay man elected to public office. Elected at the same time is staunch conservative Dan White (Brolin), initially his friend and supporter. While serving on the city's Board of Supervisors in 1978, Milk leads a fight against a statewide initiative seeking to bar gays from teaching in public schools. But White's career stalls, and he takes his wrath out on his former friend.
