If Taro Aso was hoping to improve his green credentials by pledging that Japan would reduce greenhouse gas emissions, he has probably been disappointed.

Japan's goal, to cut emissions by 15 percent below 2005 levels by 2020, has been widely criticized by environmental groups as too little to make a significant difference and by business leaders as too ambitious. So does that mean the government has got it right?

Later this year, governments will meet in Copenhagen to try to come up with a climate agreement to succeed the soon-to-expire Kyoto Protocol and stakeholders from all sections of society are moving into high gear ahead of the meeting.

On June 24, Tetsuo Saito, Japan's Environment Minister, will be at the club to talk about Japan's new emissions target, what we can expect in the run up to Copenhagen and his views on what we might see from the climate summit itself.
