"East Asian Policy, From Bush To Obama"

Now is the time for the Barack Obama administration to learn from mistakes and achievements of the George W. Bush administration and confront a real world characterized by a nuclear-armed North Korea, an economically dynamic and militarily challenging China and a politically paralyzed Japan.

Two former Bush administration officials, Stephen Yates and Christian Whiton, will come to the club, armed with foreign policy expertise.

Yates, president of DC Asia Advisory in Washington, served as an international affairs analyst at the U.S. Department of Defense from 1991 to 1996 and later was deputy assistant to Vice President Dick Cheney for National Security Affairs from 2001 to 2005.

During his stint as a Cheney adviser, he dealt with such issues as U.S. relations with Japan, Indonesia, and India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and China as well as crises ranging from North Korea to other countries. Yates is also a senior fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council, a visiting fellow at the Heritage Foundation, a board member of the U.S.-Taiwan Business Council and a member of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.

Whiton, a senior adviser of DC Asia Advisory, served as a U.S. State Department official from 2003-2009, first as a special adviser to the under secretary of state for global affairs and later as a deputy special envoy. He also acted as the senior policy adviser on North Korean human rights and transnational issues.
