Description:Tried and convicted in the U.S. for having had “unlawful sexual intercourse” with a minor over 30 years ago, Oscar-winning film director Roman Polanski was unexpectedly arrested upon his arrival at Zurich Airport on September 26. At the time of his 1978 trial in a Los Angeles court, Polanski admitted to the charges but, fearing that the judge (since accused of unethical behavior in the case) would renege on his plea bargain promises, he jumped bail and fled to France before being sentenced.
The Movie Committee is pleased to screen the engrossing 2008 documentary Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, which goes a long way toward setting the record straight on the case. The film features candid interviews with Polanski and his lawyers, as well as the victim, Samantha Geimer, and archival footage of Polanski’s court appearances and the yearlong circus that preceded his flight to France. It also reveals the bizarre antics of the late presiding judge, Laurence Rittenband, who was more concerned about his image with the media than fairness in court.
Come and decide for yourself whether the U.S. should be reprosecuting Polanski. As the New York Times put it: “This crime left two victims, Mr. Polanski, who was denied a fair trial, and Ms. Geimer, who was denied justice.”
All movie screenings are private, noncommercial events restricted to FCCJ members and their guests.
