On the eve of the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, we hear from Nissan-Renault chief executive and president Carlos Ghosn, one of only three foreigners running a big Japanese company and, since his rescue and turnaround of Nissan in the early 2000s, one of the most admired industrialists anywhere.

The past three years have been tough on Nissan and Ghosn, as they have been on the whole industry. But he's once again the centre of attention and once again by setting highly ambitious targets. Ghosn has committed the alliance to a Euros 4 billion (530 billion yen) investment in electric vehicles development, on the proposition that EVs will constitute at least 6 percent of the global vehicle market in 2020. It's a huge bet by a man who, last time he spoke to the club four years ago, was reluctant to commit to any alternative vehicle technology -- though even then he was leaning towards electric.
