Description:

Among the most famous manga of the 20th century there is a special place for Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy).

The story of a world where robots co-exist with humans, it's almost universally cited by contemporary Japanese robot developers as the reason they pursued their careers, and so can be seen as the starting point for Japan's robotics industry.

When Tetsuwan Atom hit TV screens in 1963 it pioneered an aesthetic that later became the base for anime.

And now Tetsuwan Atom is coming to overseas audiences. A new movie, "ATOM" already out in Japan, debuts in the U.S. on Oct. 23, and at the same time creators will attempt to connect with fans through a new cell phone manga service.

On Oct. 20 the FCCJ will welcome Takayuki Matsutani, president of Tezuka Productions; Yoshihide Kinokawa, director of Digital Publishing D-Arc; and, via teleconference, manga translator Frederick L. Schodt.
* Digital Publishing D-Arc will give members a hands-on demonstration of the new service.
