Although a lawyer by training, his early passion for wine and Bordeaux varietals led Pahlmeyer and a friend to transplant cuttings to California in what many thought was a doomed idea...　not to mention first having to smuggle them into the U.S. by way of Canada. Early days were indeed difficult, and it took years longer than average to produce their first commercially viable harvest.

The very first vintage, however, catapulted them to fame in 1986 when Parker anointed them with a 94 point score, and a cult was born.
