Description:

As Japan's minister for industry Masayuki Naoshima is the Democratic Party of Japan's point man in talks with corporations seeking financial help to ride out the recession. Optimistic that rising stock prices are signaling economic recovery Naoshima will come at the FCCJ on January 15, to discuss his views state of Japan's economy.

He will also answer questions on Japan's environmental policies. Part of his portfolio is implementing a government pledge to cut Japan's carbon emission by 2020 to 25% of 1990 levels. He is also charged with helping conclude the stalled Doha Round of global free trade negotiations this year.

A former deputy chief of the Confederation of Japan Automobile Workers' Unions, he has close connections with labor unions at Toyota Motor Corp. He was first elected to the House of Councillors on the ticket of the now-defunct Democratic Socialist Party in 1992 and joined the Democratic Party of Japan in 1998.
