KENJI HATTORI is the director of the foreign news section of Jiji Press. Upon graduating from Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, he joined Jiji in 1979. After serving at Jiji’s headquarters in Tokyo and its regional branch in Osaka, in 1988 he started his career as a correspondent in Seoul. For the past 20 years he has drawn on his background as a China specialist, serving as a correspondent in Beijing three times: 1990-1994, 1998-2002 and 2006-2009. In recent years, he had a chance to report major incidents and events such as the insurrection in Tibet, the massive earthquake in Sichuan and the Beijing Olympics. He also witnessed a dramatic improvement in Japan-China relationships. He returned to Japan in March 2009.
MARGARET CONLEY was previously based in Jakarta and contributes to all ABC News platforms, including broadcast, radio and the Internet. Conley has contributed stories
from across the Asia-Pacific region, including Hong Kong, Australia, Thailand, Cambodia and the Solomon Islands.

KATSUMI KASAHARA graduated from Hosei University in 1973 and joined AP Tokyo in 1977. He covered the Philippine revolution and South Korea's democratic movement before the Seoul Olympics. He has covered the Olympic Games seven times (including both summer and winter Games) and has visited North Korea three times. He also covered summit meetings several times and the 1992 visit of the Emperor and Empress to China. He loves guitar music, especially bluegrass and European jazz. Kasahara left AP when he turned 60 and now works for Gamma Photo Presse Images of France.
MA JIE, who was born in October 1982, joined China’s official Xinhua News Agency after graduating from university in 2005. He started writing bilingual news reports while based in Beijing. In 2006-2007, he was transferred to Xinhua’s branch office in Nanjing, where he reported on local news, ranging from political stories to cultural and sports news. In March 2008, he was transferred to Xinhua's Beijing headquarters, where he mainly worked as an editor. Ma witnessed and covered several major events, including the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the riots in Lhasa in March 2008. During the massive earthquake in Sichuan Province, he worked as an English editor to break the latest information to the world. In September 2008 Ma was transferred to Xinhua’s Tokyo branch office. In this new field, Ma is a keen learner. He covers major Japanese political, economic and cultural events, while striving to learn the Japanese language. He is also a frequent guest at the FCCJ, where he enjoys meeting new friends while participating in press conferences and speeches by the Club’s distinguished speakers.
