Former Foreign and Home Minister of Central Tibetan

Description:

The Tibetan issue remains a source of tension between Washington and Beijing, as China dismisses foreign criticism of its Tibetan policy as interference in its internal affairs.

Tempa Tsering is a senior member of the task force for negotiation with the Chinese government, and a former foreign and home minister of the Central Tibetan Administration.

As chief representative of the Dalai Lama in New Delhi, the 59-year-old native of Tibet has been working hard to make progress on the Tibetans' demand for genuine autonomy.

Tsering comes to the club in the wake of the Feb. 18 meeting between U.S. President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama at the White House, which took place despite Chinese pressure. Obama hailed the spiritual leader's commitment to nonviolence and dialogue with the Chinese government.
